As per the Education Act, each school or center must set up a governing board (or school council) made up of parents, staff members, students (for secondary schools and centres) and representatives of the community.

This official body has specific functions and powers related to the educational services, extracurricular services, material and financial resources of its school or centre.

Each governing board establishes its rules of operation and internal management in order to promote efficiency and decisions in response to the needs of the community, in compliance with the Act. In other words, the members of the governing board approve, adopt and give their opinions on various subjects and aspects of the school or centre.
